Instrumental Delivery
Instrumental Delivery (also called Assisted Vaginal Delivery) is a type of childbirth where a gynaecologist or obstetrician uses special instruments to help guide the baby out of the birth canal during a vaginal delivery.
When is Instrumental Delivery Needed?
It's used when:
- The mother is too exhausted to push effectively
- The baby’s heart rate drops, showing signs of distress
- Labor is not progressing
- There's a need to shorten the second stage of labor
Types of Instruments Used:
1. Forceps
- Curved, tong-like metal instruments
- Gently grip the baby’s head to help guide it out during a contraction
2. Vacuum Extractor (Ventouse)
- A soft or rigid cup attached to a vacuum pump
- Suction is applied to the baby’s head to help guide it out
Recovery After Instrumental Delivery
- Similar to normal vaginal delivery, but healing might take a bit longer if there were any tears or episiotomy
- Pain relief, sitz baths, and pelvic floor exercises can help
