Dilatation and Curettage

Dilatation and Curettage (D&C) is a minor surgical procedure in which the cervix is dilated (opened) and the lining of the uterus (endometrium) is gently scraped or suctioned out using a curette. It is commonly used for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.

When is a D&C Done?

Diagnostic purposes:
  • Investigating abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Evaluation of thickened endometrium
  • Checking for uterine cancer or polyps
Therapeutic purposes:
  • Incomplete miscarriage or retained products of conception (RPOC)
  • Molar pregnancy
  • To remove uterine polyps or small fibroids
  • Postmenopausal bleeding
  • To control heavy menstrual bleeding

Procedure Overview:

  • Usually done under local or general anesthesia
  • The cervix is gradually dilated using special instruments
  • A curette (a spoon-shaped tool or suction device) is used to remove the uterine lining
  • The sample is often sent for histopathological examination

Aftercare Tips:

  • Rest for the day after the procedure
  • Monitor for signs of infection (fever, foul discharge)
  • Follow-up visit with your gynaecologist is important for review of biopsy results
