Dilatation and Curettage
Dilatation and Curettage (D&C) is a minor surgical procedure in which the cervix is dilated (opened) and the lining of the uterus (endometrium) is gently scraped or suctioned out using a curette. It is commonly used for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.
When is a D&C Done?
Diagnostic purposes:
- Investigating abnormal uterine bleeding
- Evaluation of thickened endometrium
- Checking for uterine cancer or polyps
Therapeutic purposes:
- Incomplete miscarriage or retained products of conception (RPOC)
- Molar pregnancy
- To remove uterine polyps or small fibroids
- Postmenopausal bleeding
- To control heavy menstrual bleeding
Procedure Overview:
- Usually done under local or general anesthesia
- The cervix is gradually dilated using special instruments
- A curette (a spoon-shaped tool or suction device) is used to remove the uterine lining
- The sample is often sent for histopathological examination
Aftercare Tips:
- Rest for the day after the procedure
- Monitor for signs of infection (fever, foul discharge)
- Follow-up visit with your gynaecologist is important for review of biopsy results
