Abortion

Abortion is the medical termination of pregnancy and can be performed through medications or surgical procedures, depending on the gestational age, health of the patient, and medical indications.

Gynaecologists provide safe, legal, and confidential abortion services following national guidelines (like the MTP Act in India).

Types of Abortion

1. Medical Abortion (Non-surgical)
  • Done up to 9 weeks of pregnancy
  • Involves taking abortion pills
  • Causes cramping and bleeding similar to a heavy period
  • Follow-up is important to ensure the abortion is complete
2. Surgical Abortion
  • Used in later weeks (up to 20 weeks in India) or when medical abortion fails
  • Two common types:
Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) / Suction Evacuation (up to 12–14 weeks)
Dilatation & Evacuation (D&E) (for second trimester)
  • Done under local or general anesthesia
  • Usually completed in a daycare setting

Reasons for Abortion

  • Unplanned or unwanted pregnancy
  • Fetal abnormalities
  • Maternal health conditions
  • Failed contraception
  • Social or mental health concerns

Post-Abortion Care

  • Rest for 1–2 days
  • Watch for signs of infection or heavy bleeding
  • Follow-up scan (especially after medical abortion)
  • Discuss future contraception options
