Adolescent Health

Adolescent Health in gynaecology focuses on the reproductive and hormonal health of girls aged roughly 10 to 19 years. It is a crucial phase where the body undergoes physical, emotional, and hormonal changes, and early guidance from a gynaecologist can help promote healthy habits, menstrual well-being, and awareness.

Why Adolescent Girls Should Visit a Gynaecologist:

A gynaecologist helps teenagers with:

1. Menstrual Issues
  • Irregular or painful periods
  • Heavy bleeding (menorrhagia)
  • Missed periods (amenorrhea)
  • Early or delayed puberty
2. PCOD / PCOS
  • Common in teens with irregular periods, weight gain, acne, excess hair
3. Acne, Hair Fall & Weight Gain
  • Often linked to hormonal imbalance
4. HPV Vaccination
  • Protects against cervical cancer; ideally given between 9 to 14 years
5. Nutritional Counselling
  • To prevent anemia, obesity, or bone weakness (due to calcium/vitamin D deficiency)
6. Mental Health Support
  • Hormonal changes can affect mood, sleep, and self-esteem
  • Gynaecologists may work with counsellors if needed

Other Conditions Managed in Adolescent Gynaecology:

  • Vaginal infections or irritation
  • Early/Delayed puberty
  • Breast development issues

What Happens During a Gynaecology Visit?

  • Friendly, private conversation about concerns
  • General and possibly abdominal exam (not always pelvic)
  • Blood tests, ultrasound if needed
  • Clear explanations to both teen and parent (respecting privacy where appropriate)

When Should the First Gynaecologist Visit Be?

  • Between 13–15 years, even if there are no major issues—just for awareness, education, and building comfort.
