Fibroids

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths (also called leiomyomas or myomas) that develop in or around the uterus. They are very common in women of reproductive age, and many don’t even realize they have them unless symptoms appear.

A gynaecologist helps diagnose and treat fibroids based on size, number, location, and whether they are causing problems.

Causes of Fibroids:

While the exact cause isn’t fully known, possible contributing factors include:

  • Hormones (estrogen and progesterone promote their growth)
  • Genetics (family history)
  • Obesity
  • Early menstruation

Types of Fibroids (Based on Location):

  • Intramural – in the uterine wall (most common)
  • Subserosal – on the outer surface of the uterus
  • Submucosal – just under the inner lining (can affect bleeding/fertility)
  • Pedunculated – attached by a stalk

Common Symptoms of Fibroids:

  • Heavy or prolonged periods
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Frequent urination or difficulty emptying bladder
  • Constipation
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Enlarged abdomen or bloating
  • Infertility or miscarriages (in some cases)

Many fibroids are asymptomatic and found incidentally on ultrasound.

Diagnosis by Gynaecologist:

  • Pelvic exam
  • Ultrasound (TVS/abdominal)
  • MRI (for detailed mapping if needed)
  • Hysteroscopy (to view inside the uterus)

When to See a Gynaecologist:

  • Heavy, painful, or irregular periods
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • Pelvic discomfort
  • Rapidly growing abdominal mass
